We have been breeding Australian labradoodles since 2005. So I have been grooming many labradoodles about 20 years now. I have never had any problems in keeping them tanglefree.
Most doodle owners think this is very difficult and follow the advice their doggroomer gives them to brush or comb their dog every day to avoid matting. And if their dogs have matts they use dematting tools.
But the thing is brushing them every day will make the coat very dry which will cause matting again very fast.
Dematting tools have little knives that cut through the matts yes, but do not know the difference between the healthy hair and the dead hair. So the healthy hair will get damaged and this will also cause matting again real quick.
So here is how I keep my doodles tanglefree by brushing them once per 2 – 4 weeks.
Do not wash them first. Brush the coat dry.
Brush in small layers starting below and work zigzagging to the top. So from belly to backbone. from toes to shoulder, etc.
Use your free hand to keep the hair up and brush away the hairs from under that hand with your brush. Whether you use a handslickerbrush or the ADB Petite makes no difference. (You can find a very nice instructionvideo of how this is done with the ADB Petite on this website).
Make sure you have brushed the whole body, tail and head like this. Always check with a comb to remove the little pieces of matts that are left behind in the coat.
Coats will get static because of the brushing. Static hair will attract dirt and will matt agian real quick so it is important to wash your dog after the brushing with a good dogshampoo. Rinse out carefully and dry the coat with a doodlebooster or föhn untill it is only a bit moist. Then use a good conditonerspray over the coat.
Now you have to find out how often you need to brush your dog to be able to keep him/her tanglefree.
